(한국어 시음기 밑에 있어요!)
The Glenfiddich 15 is often considered one of the best offerings in Glenfiddich's main line of whiskies, striking a perfect balance between the effervescently airy and light Glenfiddich 12, and the richer and more full-bodied Glenfiddich 18.
What separates this whisky from its brethren though is that after it is blended together, it is then thrown into a solera vat (typically used for sherry making) and left there for an unspecified amount of time to allow its components to "marry" together well.
I did originally consider doing a tasting of this whisky back when I was taking part in the Glenfiddich Experimental series online tasting, but I ended up deciding against that and kept the vial in my desk drawer. It was only a few months later, when my wife decided that she wanted to open our vial of Glendronach 15 that I remembered I still had a vial of this Glenfiddich in there too. So she had the Glendronach, while I had this. I will post some tasting notes of the Glendromach 15 in the future, but for now, lets do the Glenfiddich!
Vitals:
ABV: 40%
Colour: Dark Gold.
Chill-filtered: Yes.
Nose: Strong notes of malted barley, raisins and apples that have been generously sprinkled with brown sugar on the initial nosing. Already this feels much richer and heavier than the 12, and I've only just got started! these notes slowly morph into milk chocolate, with a side of oat cereal and dried apricots. A touch of citrus, almost like a quick splash of lemon juice hands around behind everything. Everything then sort of mish-mashes all together, giving a long and highly aromatic malic note reminiscent of a good English cider. 19.5/25
Palate: Surprisingly dry and oaky at first, but this quickly gives a way to rising notes of vanilla infused raisins and prunes, As the raisins and prunes dance with fresh honey on the palate, they are prevented from developing into a cloying sweetness by the intervention of earthy nutmeg, spicy cinnamon bark and almonds , creating a medley of flavours not unlike a hearty slice of dundee cake. 21/25
Finish: Moderate in length. Fades with a sweet and sour mix of green apples, raisins and honey. 16/25
Value*: Isn't too bad price wise if you can find it at Namdaemun market. Just don't even think about buying this at a supermarket or Costco. It's good, but it isn't worth the price they ask for it. 16/25
Conclusion:
It's a decent, moderately sherried whisky that is a good step up from the 12 year old release if you are looking for something a bit more full bodied, with more of a punch to it. However, with that said, it does feel a bit lacking compared to other whiskies in the same age range. The 12 has the benefit of largely going up against what would be considered the "budget" range. Not so with the 15. As I said with the 12 though, I'd really love to try this at a cask strength ABV.
Basic Rating: 75.3%
Price Adjusted Rating*: 72.5%
Daily Drinker: Sure, if I could get it cheaply enough.
Possible pairing: Milk Chocolate. Vanilla ice cream.
Where to find in Korea: Namdaemun, JuraShop, Homeplus, Costco.
TLDR Version:
N: Malted barley, raisins, apples, brown sugar → milk chocolate, cereal, dried apricots, lemon juice → hard cider.
P: dry oak spice → vanilla, raisins, prunes, honey → nutmeg, cinnamon bark, almonds → dundee cake
F: Moderate length, with a sweet and sour mix of green apples, raisins and honey.
V: Try and find at Namdaemun rather than at a supermarket.
C: A decent sherried whisky, but doesn't stand up as quite as well to other 15 year olds as the Glenfiddich 12 does to other 12 year olds.
Buy / Mooch / Pass: Buy.
