Glenfiddich 12 ( 글렌피딕 12)

(I've temporarily changed the style of this review as it's part of a series I'm doing for an online tasting session. It's more brief, but it will also have a full Korean translation below it.)

As the best selling Single malt whisky whisky in the world, the Glenfiddich 12 has a reputation for being extremely friendly and highly accessible for novice whisky drinkers, while retaining the classic sweet and floral profile often associated with Speyside whiskies.

This entry level Glenfiddich is aged for 12 years in a mix of American oak and European sherry barrels, and will be the first of the four I review. Following this, I'll review the IPA, project XX and Fire & Cane. I also did a little experiment into how the whiskies interact with each other and made notes on the changes that take place in the nose and palate below the tasting notes.

Vitals:

ABV: 40%

Colour: Honey gold.

Chill-filtered: Yes.

Nose: This whisky is very floral, with notes of fresh apples and pear blossoms, creamy vanilla ice cream and a honeyed sweetness and mingles with the apple notes, giving an aroma of freshly pressed apple juice. There is a touch of oak, milk chocolate and sultanas in the background, adding depth. 19.5/25

Palate: Apples and honey notes compliment the malted barley giving this whisky a very sweet and light flavour profile. Lemons, cream and a subtle wood spice hangs around in the background, occasionally intermingling with the medley of sweet notes. 20/25

Finish: Medium length and very smooth with sweet vanilla and honey. 17.5/25

Conclusion:

A very gentle and easy to drink whisky. There are no strong or overpowering flavours, instead it is floral, light and fruity, making it perfect as an introductory whisky for new drinkers. It may be a little too light for experienced whisky drinkers though, largely in part due to it's low alcohol percentage. It would be very interesting to try this expression at cask strength.

Interesting interactions with other Glenfiddichs:

As I'm doing these reviews as part of an online testing session, I took the liberty to make comparisons of the palate and nose of this whisky after trying three other Glenfiddich expressions.

After trying the Glenfiddich IPA: The nose became less floral and a brown sugar note appeared. On the palate, it was far less sweet and much spicier, with more pepper and wood spice from the barrels.

After trying the Glenfiddich Project XX: The nose became much more floral and there was an intense vanilla note. On the palate, it was like drinking a herbal tea, such as chamomile. Herbal and grassy.

After trying the Glenfiddich Fire & Cane: The nose had an intensely sweet honey note and on the palate it was like sucking on honey candy. the honey notes just dominated this whisky.

맛: 사과와 꿀 향이 이젠 맛으로 느껴집니다. 꽤 달달하면서도 가볍습니다. 레몬과 크림 맛도 느껴지는데 약간의 매콤함도 섞여있네요. 20/25

끝맛: 여운은 길지 않은 편입니다. 바닐라와 꿀 맛이 끝에서 부드럽게 느껴집니다. 17.5/25

결론:

아주 부드럽고 마시기 쉬운 위스키입니다. 그 때문에 초보자에게 적격이겠지요. 다만, 이미 여러 위스키를 접해본 사람이라면 다소 심심하게 느껴질 수도 있을 것 같습니다. CS (캐스크 스트렝스) 버전이 있다면 굉장히 흥미로울 것 같습니다ㅎ

글렌피딕 IPA 시음 후 글렌피딕 12를 마셨을 때: 꽃 향은 갑자기 느껴지지 않고 흑설탕 향이 납니다. 맛도 더 이상 달지 않고 매워집니다. 후추 맛이 느껴질 정도네요;

글렌피딕 프로젝트 XX 시음 후 글렌피딕 12를 마셨을 때: 이번엔 글렌피딕 12 특유의 꽃 향이 훨씬 살아나고 바닐라 향도 더 강하게 느껴집니다. 맛은 마치 카모마일 차처럼 허브차 맛이 나네요.

글렌피딕 파이어 & 케인 시음 후 글렌피딕 12를 마셨을 때: 꿀 향이 강하게 올라오고 맛도 마치 꿀 사탕을 빨아먹는 것 같습니다. 말 그대로 꿀 맛이네요ㅎ
