The Classic Laddie is the signature expression of Islay's Bruichladdich distillery and is one of the few mainstream Islay whiskies that happens to be completely unpeated, a rarity for the island. Opting to rely on the qualities of the barley used rather than on peat smoke or cask finishes, the classic Laddie also comes in at a cool 50% ABV; allowing its inherent characteristics to shine brightly, for better or worse. It also happens to be a NAS whisky, but it's estimated that the contents within have been aged for around 7-8 years, though it varies depending on the batch year.

Nose: A burst of apples, fresh plums and malty cereals hits the nose at first. It's a little harsh, with notes of ethanol, but as it opens up, it develops into a soft and creamy vanilla with the mildest hint of lemons. After a prolonged nosing the citric note develops into an aroma of soured cream, sour apples and tangerines, with a prominent note of sugared barley tea. 20.5/25

Palate: Very spicy with red hot chilli peppers burning like dragon fire. As the spice tempers, notes of malted barley, sweet honey and peppermint follow, gradually morphing into baked apples served on a slice of wholewheat bread. The chilli note never completely disappears and remains in the background, giving things a spicy kick as the move on to the finish. 16/25

Finish: The spicy chilli finally begins to draw down and is replaced by a nutty, almost creamy almond note as it comes to its end. 18.5/25

Conclusion:

Islay whiskies are known for their smoky characteristics, but the Classic Laddie, being unpeated, gives you none of that. Instead, you get to experience what it's like to be burned alive! Not really, but spice feels like its defining characteristic and that alone will make it a daunting choice for newbies. However, once you get past the spicy heat, you are treated to a sweet and almost breakfast cereal-like blend of flavours.

2단계: 크리미한 바닐라, 미약한 레몬 향 ☞ 점점 부드럽게 변해가네요.

3단계: 사워크림, 새큼한 사과, 새콤한 귤, 설탕을 탄 보리차 ☞ 향이 더 새콤해지는 와중에 기분 좋은 보리차 향이 주변에서 감돕니다.

맛:

1단계: 매운 고추 ☞ 입에서 불이 난 것 같습니다;; 화이아~~

2단계: 맥아, 꿀, 페퍼민트 ☞ 매운 기가 가시면서 맛이 피어오릅니다.

3단계: 통밀 빵 한 조각과 함께 나온 구운 사과 ☞ 맛이 정갈하고 깔끔해집니다. 이 와중에도 매운 맛이 사라지지 않네요ㅠㅠ

끝맛:

견과류, 크림, 아몬드 ☞ 드디어 강렬했던 매운 맛이 꺾이면서 고소함으로 끝을 맺습니다.

결론:

보통: 아일라 위스키는 스모키한 것으로 알려져있지만 브룩라디 클래식 라디는 언피트로서 예외에 해당합니다. 대신 산 채로 탄다는 게 어떤 느낌인지 경험하게 해줍니다!(?) 물론 그 정도는 아니지만.. '맵다'는 클래식 라디의 가장 큰 특징입니다ㅎ 이 때문에 위스키 입문자는 다소 꺼릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 하지만, 일단 매운 맛이 한풀 꺾이고 나면 찾아오는 달콤함과 시리얼 한 그릇 같은 구수함은 매력이 있네요.
