Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10 (포트 샬롯 10년)

The Port Charlotte 10 is a peated whisky from Bruichladdich, named after the now defunct Port Charlotte distillery of Islay. Bruichladdich revived the brand in 2001 and used the name for their peated whisky line, as homage to the old distillery which was famed for its peat fired stills. The Port Charlotte 10 is peated to 40ppm and is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-French wine barrels for a minimum of 10 years.

Vitals:

Colour: Light gold.

Chill-filtered: No.

Nose: Sharp with medicinal iodine and brine, quickly followed by a smooth, rolling smokiness from the peat. The bring and the smoke give it a characteristic not dissimilar to charcoaled clams and barbecued shrimp(sorry Australians :p). There's a gentle seabreeze that's reminiscent of standing in the middle of a busy port, surrounded by fishing trawlers and mountains of crab cages. There's also an underlying menthol note giving it a certain minty note that I also happened to find in other Bruichladdichs 21 /25

Palate: Black pepper spice hits the tongue, followed by oak wood and smoke, combining to create a campfire-like profile. As the campfire rages on, sweet malted barley, earthy potatoes, cream and seawater slowly rise to usurp the palate. 23/25

Finish: The intensity of the smoke returns as it pushes everything else to the side. With it comes a note of salted caramel, giving a long, smoky and slightly sweet finish. 20/25

Conclusion:

Smoky and slightly maritime, the Port Charlotte 10 lives up to its Islay heritage well. The peat smoke helps considerably in mellowing out some of the more...lively....characteristics of Bruichladdich whiskies, yet its not quite as pungent as Islays biggest hitters (nor Bruichladdichs own premium "super-heavily peated" range), making it far more accessible for someone who wants to get into peated whiskies than say an Ardbeg or Laphroaig. If it was more widely available in Korea, I'd probably have a bottle at home.

향: 1단계: 약, 요오드, 소금물, 스모크 ☞ 날카로운 요오드 향이 코를 먼저 강타합니다. 이후 부드러운 스모크 향이 빠르게 밀려옵니다. 2단계: 구운 조개, 새우 바베큐, 게잡이 통발 ☞ 스모키하면서도 바닷가에서 나는 짭조름한 향이 구운 해산물을 떠오르게 하네요. 좀 더 음미해보면 마치 게잡이 통발이 잔뜩 쌓여있는 항구 한 가운데 바닷바람을 맞으며 서있는 것 같습니다ᄒ 3단계: 멘톨 ☞ 다른 브룩라디 시리즈에서도 느껴지던 민트향이 은은히 깔려있습니다.

맛: 1단계: 후추 ☞ 후추의 매운 맛이 혀를 먼저 강타합니다. 2단계: 오크통, 스모크 ☞ 후추 맛과 결합하여 마치 캠프파이어 같습니다. 3단계: 달콤한 맥아, 흙내음 나는 감자, 크림, 바닷물 ☞ 캠프파이어와 같은 맛이 강해지는 가운데 서서히 달콤한 맛이 팔레트를 적십니다.

끝맛: 강한 스모크향이 모든 것을 밀어냅니다. 피니시가 상당히 길다보니 끝나가면서 짭잘한 캬라멜과 약간의 달콤함이 느껴지네요.

결론:

포트 샬롯 10년은 아일라 위스키라면 떠올리게 되는 스모키함과 바다내음을 겸비하고 있습니다. 포트 샬롯 10년의 피티함과 스모키함 덕분에 클래식 라디나 아일라 발리에서 느껴지던 매운 맛은 많이 누그러져있습니다. 하지만 스모키함의 정도가 라프로익이나 라가불린, 아드벡만큼 강하진 않습니다. 그렇기 때문에 피트 위스키를 처음 접하는 사람에게 아일라 대표 삼총사에 앞서서 권하기 좋을 것 같네요.
