The Octomore 10.1 is one of the newer entries in Bruichladdich's Octomore brand. The brand is known for having some of the most heavily peated whiskies in the world under its stable and the Octomore 10.1, packing a very cool 107ppm, is no different. Funnily enough, for an Octomore, the 10.1 is actually on the lighter side (the strongest peating being the 309.1ppm of the older Octomore 8.3). Yet, despite this, it's still practically twice as heavily peated as their next closest competitor's whiskies. The 10.1 is also aged in first-fill ex-bourbon Oak barrels and has an age statement of 5 years.
Vitals:
ABV: 59.8%
Colour: Straw.
Chill-filtered: No.
Nose: Initially a blend of burning campfire wood, tobacco and citrus oil with a minty menthol note hanging around, but the intensity of the smoke increases the longer it is nosed and meaty notes begin to appear. First it progresses to barbecued chicken, then seared pork and then finally blackened steaks. As the meaty note develops the tobacco note becomes stronger and more cigar like, while a fruity charred pineapple note appears in the background. 23/25
Palate: Feels like ingesting cigars with an overpowering gut-punch of peat smoke, but it fades away surprisingly quickly in a manner that could be described as "hit-and-run". As it fades, a blend of black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, peppermint and licorice take over, giving an oddly herbal spice. Honey and candied ginger then appear, followed by red apples and brown sugar as it draws closer to its finish. 19/25
Finish: As it enters its final moments, the sweet notes blend into caramel and ground coffee beans appear. It almost feels like a caramel macchiato. A caramel macchiato that has had a Cuban cigar dunked into it. Overall though, its a long finish. 18/25
Conclusion:
I'll be honest, I was expecting a much more meaty whisky given how heavily peated this whisky actually is, but with exception of the initial very brief impression on the palate it actually turned out to be a much lighter and sweeter whisky than I expected. It's good, but I probably wouldn't buy it. It's just not worth the retail price. That said, I wonder how the other Octomores of past and present compare.
Rating: 80%
Octomore Vs Port Charlotte Comparison
Because of how high the peat PPM is on the Octomore 10.1, there was a little experiment I wanted to run. I took some leftovers of the Port Charlotte and tried them again after sipping the Octomore. The results were interesting as I basically stripped away the smoke from the Port Charlotte and got to experience them "naked" (Jeez that sounds so wrong!)

Octomore 10.1 Vs Port Charlotte 10:
Nose: Very minty with a dry ash, almost dust like note. lingering smell of acetone and paint remover. Not pleasant. Palate: Spicy and dry, with black pepper and wood, followed by vanilla
Finish: Smooth, slightly woody and slightly ashy.
Conclusion: The oak barrel influence comes through more clearly.
Octomore 10.1 Vs Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2012:
Nose: Orange peel, malted barley, salt and a little bit of mint.
Palate: More malty than before, followed by black pepper, peaches and apricots.
Finish: Very sweet and long, like iced peach tea.
Conclusion: It becomes very fruity and sweet without the smoke.
ABV: 59.8%
