The Jura Superstition is a now discontinued offering from the eponymously named Isle of Jura distillery just off the cost of mainland Scotland. It was one of a series of four releases produced by the distillery from 2010 to 2018 (alongside the Jura 10 Origin, Prophecy and Jura 16: Duirachs' Own) before being replaced with a new line-up.
The Superstition is a NAS entry and contains a small percentage of peated malt, giving it a faint smokiness. It was also aged in ex-bourbon barrels and my understanding is that at least some of the contents(though probably not very much) were aged for up to 21 years before being blended into this product.
Despite being discontinued you can still find it for sale in whisky shops across the world. I found my small bottle in Osaka, Japan.
Vitals:
ABV: 43%
Colour: Caramel
Chill-filtered: Yes.
Nose: Lightly smoked wood and sea breeze are followed by creamy vanilla and a touch of oak. Fresh green pears and hints of lemon pepper rub sit in the background. 19/25
Palate: initially a peppery kick dominates, with notes of salt and lemon zest building as the peppery woodspice mellows. some sweet vanilla notes appear but salt and sea brine continue to ratchet up in intensity and eventually overpower everything else as it draws to its finish. 16/25
Finish: Salty and long with some citrus and vanilla in the background. 21/25
Value*: Discontinued, so difficult to find in Korea. You may pay more than it’s worth because of this. 5/25
Conclusion:
Two words. Salt Bomb. This whisky is relatively simple and isn’t very peaty at all, but it has saline notes by the bucket-load. Most island style whiskies tend towards a salty and briny profile, but the Superstition truly takes it to another level. I liked it, but I can easily see others thinking that it is perhaps *too* extreme in that direction.
