Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2011 (브룩라디 아일라 발리 2011년 )

If there's one thing that Bruichladdich is known for outside of their Octomore range of insanely peated whiskies, it is their obsession with the terroir of barley. This drives them to make yearly releases of whiskies distilled solely from Islay barley.

This unpeated entry from the distillery was crafted from locally grown barley and distilled in 2011 before being aged in a mixture of ex-bourbon, Sauternes and Austrian wine casks and then blended together.

Vitals:

ABV: 50%

Colour: Straw.

Chill-filtered: No.

Nose: A malty funk combined with a prominent nutty note hits the senses right away, almost like the aroma of a heavily malted beer. Right away you can sense that this is richer than the classic laddie. As the malt fades, it's replaced with a creamy oatmeal porridge and notes of mushrooms,wet soil, mint tea and cacao nibs. This earthiness is complimented by a background aroma of fresh plums and the ever so slightest hint of sea salt. 22/25

Palate: Spicy at first, with black pepper and woodspice, but it quickly gives way to sweet fresh peaches, plums and malted barley. Then out of the blue,a briny sea salt appears and the sweet notes morph into salted plums and buttered bread. Behind the salt, an earthy note develops, reminiscent of carrots, or even carrot cake, and there's a slightly sweet, slightly salty and bread-like complexity to it. 17.5/25

Finish: As it draws to its end, the buttery bread note intensifies before fading out,giving a medium length, slightly salty, slightly malty and slightly creamy finish. 21/25

Conclusion:

There's an interesting level of earthiness to this whisky that wasn't present in the Classic Laddie, adding a layer of complexity that its spicy sibling lacked. Lacking that gut-punchingly fiery kick, it was a far more enjoyable experience than the Classic Laddie and I could feel more of the classic Islay characteristics, with exception of the smoke!

3단계: 자두, 바다 소금 ☞ 흙내음이 뒤따라오는 달콤함과 짭쪼름한 향과 잘 어울립니다.

맛:

1단계: 후추, 우드스파이스 ☞ 첫 맛은 맵군요.

2단계: 복숭아, 자두, 맥아 ☞ 과일과 맥아 맛으로 빠르게 바뀝니다.

3단계: 바다 소금, 가염버터 ☞ 갑자기 소금의 짭잘한 맛이 튀어오릅니다?!

4단계: 당근, 당근 케이크 ☞ 다시 흙내음이 느껴지는데 약간의 단 맛, 약간의 짠 맛 그리고 빵의 구수함과 같이 어우러지면서 당근 케이크처럼 느껴집니다.

끝맛:

가염버터가 듬뿍 들어간 빵 맛이 강하게 느껴지다가 약간의 짭조름함, 크리미함 그리고 맥아의 구수함을 조금씩 남기고 끝을 맺습니다. 피니시가 길지는 않네요.

결론:

브룩라디 아일라 발리에는 클래식 라디에서 느껴지던 매운 맛은 없었지만 흥미로운 흙내음이 여러 단계에 걸쳐서 느껴졌습니다. 비록 아일라 발리 역시 스모키함은 없었지만 무려 4단계에 걸쳐 변화하는 팔레트에서 나오는 복합성과 변화무쌍함 덕에 즐거운 시음이었습니다.
